What to Consider When Buying Gymnastic Mats

The only considerations one has when purchasing a gymnastic mat are its thickness and dimensions.

Thickness

A thin mat will not provide adequate protection as they lack sufficient padding. On the other hand, a thick mat prevents performance as gymnasts end up sinking into the mattress when practicing. You need a cloth with a medium thickness approximately 2 inches or more depending on the stunt.

Dimension

Space is a huge issue when it comes to purchasing a mat. Evaluate the original area in place of use before proceeding to get one. Also, the purpose determines the size. Some stunts require larger mat dimensions in comparison to others. Otherwise, get one that fits both functionalities.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is there a specific thickness one should get?

A: Mat thickness depends on the purpose or use. For massive stunts, you may require thicker mats than when performing simple maneuvers. Generally, thickness ranges from 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches. Many advice using a 2-inch diameter as it works both for heavy and light aerobics.

Q: Is there a difference between yoga and a gymnastic mat?

A: Yes! Yoga mats have a smaller thickness in comparison to the gymnastics mats. Since yoga mats models are for comfort while performing different stretches, their width is often an inch or less. However, gymnastic mats have to absorb high impacts and thus thicker than an inch.

Q: Which gymnastic mat should I get?

A: The mat you decide to get should be based on potential use. If the impact is substantial and the purpose is consistent, consider getting a thick carpet, with adequate padding that retains shape and a durable cover that protects from damage, including abrasions and water damage.

Conclusion

The available mat designs and models available in the market can be challenging to choose from when needed. However, with a proper guide and detailed information on what to look out for, it is easier to select. Read through the features of each and the advantages it offers and picks a suitable mat for your children.

My 9yo daughter uses Tumbl Trak Junior mat to practice flips and uses it as her landing place. Very durable, my daughter is a solid girl about 77lbs and this provides great fall protection.

We bought two of Polar Aurora mats and connected them with the attached Velcro. We have a 5 year old, 10 month old, and infant and we wanted a place in the living room (to cover our tile floors) that we could all be on. I wanted a safe place for my babies to fall, crawl, and learn to walk. These were the perfect thing!!!

Giantex’s been getting extra use during lockdown as a weightlifting mat. The fabric is thin enough that I wouldn’t call it heavy duty and throw heavy weights around on it, but it’s held up to extra use so far.
